Post-Irene Updated Directions:

As of Thursday evening, 9/08 the route to Kinhaven is in pretty good shape - about the same as one of those good Spring frost-heave trips.... For those who know the route, it is possible to take Cold River Road to E. Clarendon Road to RT 103.

However, as of Thursday, probably the simplest route is to take RT 7 South through Rutland, past New RT 4, and then follow the detour on Middle Road past Mill River Union High School. Just past MRUHS, turn left on Squier Road (there is a detour sign "to RT 7" there. When you reach RT 7, continue straight across it and you will be on RT 103.

Rough spots are short, mostly related to culvert repairs.

Specific notes: (mileage starting from the beginning of Middle Road)

  • 2.4 mi - Turn left on Squier Road
  • 8.9 mi - Rough road just past the crest of the hill, leaving E. Wallingford
  • 11.0 mi - Turn right on RT 155
  • 11.6 mi - Rough road
  • 12.2 mi - Bump
  • 14.1 - 14.3 mi - Rough spots
  • 15.6 mi - Repair in Northbound lane
  • 22.4 mi - Rough shoulder
  • 22.8 mi - Right turn on Greendale Road, next left on Lawrence Hill, Kinhaven is about 0.5 miles on right.
Note: As late as Thursday, the VT 511 site was stating that RT 155 was closed. In fact, it is open all the way with a sign board at each end that says "Use Caution".

Kinhaven News and Schedule:

Our retreat date is Saturday/Sunday, September 10 - 11, 2011

For many years, LRYO has begun the new season with a day of rehearsals and a preview concert at the Kinhaven Music Camp in Weston, VT. We are pleased to continue this tradition!

Kinhaven is a great way for our students and parents to start the season off right! For non-musicians, there is plenty of time to take a long walk in the fresh air, visit with former friends, make new friends, and help out with the day's activities. The students come to get a jump-start on the season's music selections, reunite after a summer away, meet new LRYO members, and have a good time. We can't wait to see you there!

Please remember:

Rehearsals will be held on Saturday, September 10th with informal concerts being held later in the afternoon

Kinhaven is a wonderful day for the LRYO parents as well! Come and join us for a social gathering in the morning and then the day is yours to enjoy in the beautiful Vermont woods.

Lunch and dinner will be served for everyone! If you would like to bring some fruit or dessert to share with everyone, that would certainly be appreciated, but not required.

Pictures will be taken at Kinhaven this year! All students and directors should bring their full concert attire for photographs. (Black or black and white concert attire) We will change into concert attire for the pictures, but wear comfortable casual clothes for the day!

Kinhaven is considered a mandatory rehearsal; no additional fee is required as it is included in the our tuition.

  • From Rutland, go South on Rt. 7.
  • At the traffic light (Route 103-toward Ludlow) turn LEFT. Continue about 8 miles.
  • There is a big curve in the road and an overhead trestle; shortly after that on your right there is a general store/ gas/greenhouses called Bushey's - turn RIGHT onto Route 155 towards WESTON.
  • This road doglegs through E. Wallingford (left, right), but just keep following ROUTE 155. Continue approx. 11 or 12 miles - the route number changes into Route 100 after about 10 miles or so - but, keep going STRAIGHT.
  • Watch for the State Dept. of Transportation sign on your right which says KINHAVEN at about 10 miles or so. After the sign you will make a RIGHT hand turn on Old County Road and then an immediate LEFT onto Lawrence Hill Road. Kinhaven is on your right within ½ mile.
