LRYO is pleased announce the
2012 Anton Family Foundation Solo Competition.
First prize is an award of $1000 for future music development and a featured soloist performance with a senior ensemble at our Spring Concert.
Secondary prizes may be awarded at the adjudicators' discretion.
Competition Rules
- Musicians may sign up for the competition by submitting a completed audition application. The application must be on file at the LRYO office by Friday, January 13, 2012.
- The audition selection must be suitable for solo performance with a symphony, wind ensemble, or string orchestra.
- The application requires selection approval by the appropriate conductor (Ellen Sager for a symphony or string orchestra piece, and Glenn Giles for a wind ensemble piece).
- The competition is only open to High School and younger students who are current Wind Ensemble or Honor Strings members in good standing with LRYO.
- Previous grand prize winners are not eligible to register.
- The competition will take place on Friday, January 20, 2012 during our regularly scheduled rehearsal at Castleton State College Fine Arts Center.
Audition Guidelines
- Present the adjudicators with two copies of your music.
- Introduce your piece with title and composer. Be prepared to answer basic questions concerning the piece.
- An accompanist is required. LRYO will not supply a technician or any sound equipment. We will arrange for an accompanist, or you may bring your own.
- Auditions will be held on the CSC Fine Arts Center auditorium stage. Please wait outside the stage door in the hallway 5-10 minutes before your scheduled audition time.
- This is a closed audition for LRYO musicians in good standing, with prior registration as outlined above. Only you, your accompanist and the adjudicators will be present.
Evaluation
The Anton Competition comprises two facets, a reward grant for the winner's continued music development and an appearance as featured soloist at the LRYO Spring Concert. Student ability as well as potential audience appreciation of the featured performance will be considered. To that end, the adjudicators will be assessing:- Overall Impression
- Tone
- Intonation
- Rhythm
- Technique
- Stage Presence
- Difficulty of music
Selection Recommendations
- With your private teacher, select a piece suitable for performance with one of the aforementioned ensembles.
- The audition selection should be substantive in terms of length, but no more than approximately ten minutes. In case of a multi-movement piece, you need only know the movement that will be performed in concert.
- We have some examples of possible selections.
- Please verify that orchestral score for the piece selected is available! www.lucksmusic.com is one possible source.
- LRYO will purchase the orchestral score. Entrants are responsible for obtaining their part for the audition.
Additional Advice
- Treat the audition as if it were a performance
- Wear appropriate concert attire (men: suit and tie; women: dress or skirt)
- Enter the room with confidence!
- Be professional: act relaxed, smile, thank the adjudicators when finished - just like a Districts or All-state audition
- We prefer the concert perfomance to be from memory, but music may be used for the competition.
